It works!!!
Ben C. has shown me the error of my ways, and in this case, my error amounts to a confused high and low setup. Swapped the order of some wiring, and the previously-broken circuit now goes blinkyblinky, either green (if the wires touch) or yellow (if they don’t).
Phew. I feel like much less of a moron now.
