Habana Labs #3

Just got back a bit ago from Habana Labs’ third workshop, and it freaking ruled. Jeff set up this great series with the help of Habana Outpost and Glide Design Studios (who nicely hosted us as well), and I had to miss the first two (boo!) but was able to make this one, finally (yay!).

Apparently the first two were about designing things that go spinny-spinny in the wind, and this one was about the electronics. Perfect freaking timing, as we just did this in class last week! Neat! So, as it worked out, there were about three not-ITP people to every ITP person, so we all just led mini-sections. It’s really weird to think I know enough about ANYTHING to teach it, but it went really well.

Spent most of the time going over the electronics side of things, but towards the end we had a bit of time to build some cool applications for our ideas — one group attached a stepper to a free-floating bike wheel, another used a shopping cart, ours was hand-spun (and ideally would eventually be wind-based, should we ever get that far). Pic above.

And here’s the coolest part — the internship I’d applied for with Eyebeam that I never heard back on (working to get kinetic energy out of opening doors)? Yeah, the two researchers were at this, never got my email, and were stoked to hear I was interested — so now I might be helping out with their research.  That’d stand to open a lot of doors (har har har).
