Music in a minute

We’re to bring in a short audio clip of music we want to make, which can be something we’ve made, but should look to outside influences. I found this to be kinda impossible, as I’m one of those folks whose influences run all over the place, but I’ve tried to keep this short.

I’m interested, especially for this semester, in music forms that adapt, grow, and lead the listener on a journey. I’m thinking about building things that help this goal, and can assist in creating layers, modulating sounds, modifying melodies, etc., and these are a few songs that follow that theme. As in my listening life, I find myself skeetering between ambient electronics, hip hop beats and D.C-sound hardcore, as well as the meticulously planned vs. the spastically improvised, but hopeful something cohesive will emerge from this.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough (from Fahrenheit Fair Enough) - a beautiful song that builds on itself, adding a ton of tiny pieces and creating this feeling of growth, extension and adaptation.

Four Tet - My Angel Rocks Back And Forth (from Rounds) - pieces slapped together on the fly (as he works) that build a beautiful symphony, and unite in the end.

A Tribe Called Quest - 1nce Again (from Beats, Rhymes & Life) one of my all-time favorite beats. Ever.

Amon Tobin - Stoney Street (from Bricolage) - another song that builds and builds, but in an entirely different manner, creating jazzy layers and subtle shifts that lead the listener towards the close.

Squarepusher - Beep Street (from Hard Normal Daddy) - building, changing, rising and falling, but always centering about this one simple but beautiful melody.

Khonnor - Man From The Anthill (from Handwriting) - another beautiful, creepy soundscape.

Boards of Canada - Turqouise Hexagon Sun (from Music Has The Right To Children) - engaging, adaptive, just steamrolling along for five beautiful minues.

At The Drive-In - Arc Arsenal (from Relationship of Command) - one of the all-time biggest openings to an album.

Boy in Static - Bellyful (from Newborn) - one of the prettiest melodies I can think of, progressing along its path. Also apparently one of the only ones in this list with vocals.

Q and Not U - We Heart Our Hive (from No Kill No Beep Beep) schitzoid and fast-paced but super-layered. Way better live too.

Panda Bear - Ohne Titel (from Soccer Star) - another one that you can almost picture being pushed and pulled into existence.

Fugazi - Break (from End Hits) - constantly evolving, punch-strong but whisper-subtle at times.
