Well, damned if I know, but Randy Sarafan (of Eyebeam and Parsons) made a good stab at defining it on Instructables. I nearly peed myself reading it, it’s that good. It does a great job of explaining how the hell to talk about art, and how the hell to get paid, laid or fed while working in the art space.
It’s wonderful to look at this as I go through the process of documenting my finals, and I now find myself following his thought line that “our goal is not to justify our definition of art itself, but to justify our creative (or non-creative) efforts as art. This is easy to do because ‘Art is anything you can get away with.’”
